For most everyone under 21 the mass appeal of baseball comes from hometown teams and breaking records, thats it, for our generation the appeal of the game hardly comes from the "thrill" of Jake Peavy going for an ERA title. So after we realize our team is not making the playoffs, it seems as though in the last handful of years some very respected records have been broken. Coming from an outside perspective one might think, "Gee, why aren't baseballs ratings up with the National Football League?" well, to answer simply they haven't been done as the ones before them where done.
Now I'm not going to sit here and bore you with court  dates and all that noise, nothing sounds as uninteresting as hearing Rafael Palmeiro have to go to court for months to finally admit he lied. Yet as a fan, how am I supposed to react to two of the most prominent and respected players of their time (Bonds was debatable, yet in 2003, he was that dude) but for me to sit here a couple of months before the season starts I'm asking myself, what the hell is the appeal here?
Barry Bonds is pretty much beat to the bush, he hit more home runs than anyone and he cheated by taking steroids, allrighty tough pill to swallow. Its something that popular media has had a field day with, its played, its done, he really (insert your most affectionate verb here) up.  But now we have Roger Clemens. Complete opposite of Bonds in most regards, he was a  pitcher, a white pitcher, the best pitcher of the last 20 years. Now for a casual fan, we hear these two players, this wide of a perspective of, greatness is done. We now realize that great players as they were, before steroids, for whatever reasons said to themselves, you know what, I want more. That greed puts me the fan in a position to look in the deep depths of my heart, to have to look at any baseball game this season. MLB, I hope you realize this, I hope you realize that your product  is weak, and living in  "democratic" America we have the choice (at least in baseball) and we are not going to watch this. Check yourself baseball, look real hard, because we are pretty damn close to done with this.
