This article is a how-to on how to fix an Adobe Photoshop freeze at start-up. It involves resetting or deleting the Photoshop preferences file.
In the morning, I boot up my PC and start Adobe Photoshop CS3. Today should have been no different than any other day, except that for some reason, the program would not get passed the start-up window. It seemed to get stuck at "Reading preferences," so I started Googling the issue to try and solve my freezing problem. To my surprise, many had also experienced the same "freezing" problem, but had different symptoms. The general consensus from many advanced users, an according to Adobe articles, was to simply delete the preference file.
As it turns out, there's a quick and easy fix in the Adobe knowledge base located:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401600&sliceId=1
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
This is a quick and easy fix that Adobe claims will sometimes fix erratic or strange behavior such as freezes. Until next time, happy Photoshoping!

you can't start it by double-clicking while holding those keys, but you can still right click and choose "run". Fixed the problem for me.

Was running behind on a deadline when PS/CS3 crashed.
And it refused to open thereafter. Your solution to the rescue. Thanks man! |

Thanks for this post and thanks to Justin for mentioning the right click + open option. I'll further add to the conversation that I read that what's causing the hang up is Adobe Version Cue. It supposedly allows several people to work on the same file at the same time or some such nonsense. My problems began when I networked my computer and started working on files in different locations. Can't be sure that's what caused the problem, buuuuuut I'm not taking any chances. Once you get Ps running again, go to Edit>Preferences>File Handling and uncheck Enable Version Cue.
