The neighborhood that is known as Micro Tokyo by many begins at Sawtelle Blvd. and Olympic Blvd. in Los Angeles (90025) and extends only a few blocks. With an abundance of choices, you can find dining options to fit every budget. Here are some of my favorites:
1. Mizu 212 Degrees – 2000 Sawtelle Blvd. “Mizu” translates to water and the 212 degrees stands for its boiling point. The cuisine is shabu shabu, which are meats and vegetables that you cook yourself in a boiling pot. Their ponzu sauce is absolutely narcotic and I find myself craving it. There are bento boxes for those who would rather not experiment. In addition I have not encountered an unpleasant server over my multiple visits. They have extensive choices for tea, sake, beer, and wine. Tip: try to get a spot on the street just behind Sawtelle (Beloit Ave.) at night or park in the lot behind the restaurant for lunch. There is valet service in this back lot in the evening.
2. Hurry Curry – 2131 Sawtelle Blvd. This is an excellent choice for those on a more conservative budget. They have quite an array of meats and seafood in their signature curry sauce. Their service is quite efficient and you don’t have to wait very long for your food. Tip: park one street west of Sawtelle (Corinth Ave) and walk up – you could also get lucky and manage a spot on the side street (Mississippi Ave.). This strip mall also valets at night.
3. Beard Papas - 2130 Sawtelle Blvd. #110. Alright, this is dessert but you have to try one! These pastries are not too sweet and come in a variety of flavors. There are always vanilla, chocolate, and chocolate coated but they have a different featured flavor every day. Try Sunday or Monday’s green tea variety for a palette-pleasing taste. This location also has an assortment of other decadent desserts at a separate counter. Tip: parking in the lot can be hectic but they do valet when it is busy – if you can get a spot in front on Sawtelle then go for it (please read the signs and feed the meters during the day!)
4. GR/Eats – 2050 Sawtelle Blvd. This reasonably-priced menu has some fresh fusion dishes that are rather remarkable. It is a small location that is associated with the renowned Giant Robot pop-art stores. Tip: parking is either getting lucky on Sawtelle or Mississipi as there is only one space allocated in front of the restaurant.
5. Chabuya – 2002 Sawtelle Blvd. Open for lunch and dinner, there is an outstanding variety. Their flagship noodles are quite tasty and they have many types. This establishment has both indoor and outdoor tables and excellent service. Tip: park in the lot behind during the day or on Beloit or La Grange at night. This is the same lot as mentioned in #1 so they do valet at night.
After dining, take a walk and check out the local shops. There are two Giant Robot stores – one with nearly all toys and the other with more handbags, shirts, and art. With a few eclectic clothing and arty stores to browse through it’s a great way to walk off your meal.
