Yeah – I understand that the title seems a bit unorthodox but I really have to get this off my chest.  After tonight’s dining experience I felt the need to share this with the rest of the world.  As our server forgot our drink order and came back to ask us, she said to my husband “Diet Coke?”  He ordered a Sprite.  Sprite and Diet Coke do not sound alike nor do they even have the same number of syllables.  I don’t consider my man fat but I understand he is not at his playing weight anymore.  Once a minor league pitcher, he is more Jonathan Broxton now then Randy Johnson.  With that, here are five things servers should think about before they let the words out of their mouths:

1.  “That was a Diet Coke?”  As I mentioned, our server came back to our table and informed us that she forgot what drinks we ordered.  Looking at my husband, she nodded her head as she confirmed his Diet Coke.  Again, he did not nor has he ever ordered a diet beverage.  This phenomenon is not endemic to only this restaurant, but happens nearly every time a server forgets our drink order.  The frequency with which this occurs is quite appalling.

2. “You want a large?”  Whenever there is a choice of size, the server will nod at him and assume he wants the biggest portion available.

 3. “I don’t think that will be enough for you.”  As we were at lunch a few days ago the nice server informed my husband that she did not think he ordered enough food.  Nice!

4. “Is this together?”  Interestingly, we can come in together (sometimes holding hands) and people still think we have nothing to do with each other.  Just because one of us is on the heavy side does not mean we are only friends.

5. “Here’s the dessert menu.”  May I suggest that servers should ask if we would like to see the dessert menu the way they do other patrons?  I am, of course, excluding the fine establishments that bring this to all clientele.

May I just reiterate that simply because one has some extra pounds - they are no less human.  They have feelings like anyone else.  Before you judge someone that may be overweight, look in the mirror and assure your own perfection.
