So I watched the fight between Kimbo Slice and Tank Abbott in their match tonight. MMA fighting is an interesting sport, a far cry from traditional boxing. These fighters barely have gloves on and are allowed to hit each other when they are down. It can get quite bloody, but popularity is really picking up.
Tank Abbott is one of the original athletes in the sport and has even retired at one point. At 42, he didn’t exactly look like he was at his “playing weight”. Kimbo Slice on the other hand is only 34 and quite the muscular specimen. Besides age, the main difference is their training. While Tank has a list of fighting credentials including amateur boxing and college wrestling, Kimbo is a pure street fighter. He has won both of his pro matches rather quickly in spite of no formal training.
It will be interesting to see if Kimbo can become a true MMA contender. Although he has won both pro fights, they were not against opponents that were at the top of their game. I’ll be convinced if he can beat someone like Chuck Liddell or Randy Couture.
